 Q. Which of the following medical expenses is not deductible on your tax return?

 a. Dentures
 b. Lasik eye surgery
 c. Over-the-counter medicine obtained without a prescription
 d. Weight loss programs

The answer is c

Prescription medicines are deductible on your tax return as medical expenses. However, non-prescription drugs, such as aspirin, are not deductible even if they are
recommended by a physician.

The IRS recently ruled that weight loss programs can be written off by taxpayers who have been diagnosed by a physician as being obese or suffering from a condition such as hypertension. The cost of dentures and Lasik eye surgery have also been approved by the IRS as deductible expenses.

However, it can be difficult to qualify for medical expense deductions because of the limits imposed. In order to get a deduction, your medical expenses must total more than 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income.
