"Thanks for doing such a great job and giving so much of your time and energy to AAJ and the students." S. Mund and N. Etori, AAJ STAC Manager and Coordinator
Linda Sherman performed the duties of coordinator for the Philadelphia Region's AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR JUSTICE, 2007 Student Trial Advocacy Competition. Sixteen teams from 12 schools competed.
Fifty lawyers and students from around the region volunteered to act as judges and bailiffs for this mock trial event. The trials took place in 8 courtrooms at Philadelphia's City Hall, Court of Common Pleas, over 4 days.
One of AAJ's goals is to inspire excellence in trial advocacy through training and education for both law students and practicing attorneys. One way AAJ accomplishes this goal is by sponsoring the National Student Trial Advocacy Competition, an annual nationwide mock trial competition. This is an exceptional opportunity for law students to develop and practice their trial advocacy skills before distinguished members of the bar and bench.
AAJ's mock trial cases are always civil cases and tend to deal with products liability, personal injury, or medical malpractice/negligence issues. This years case was a personal injury matter regarding a car accident and expert testimony. Teams were judged on their skills in case preparation, opening statements, use of facts, the examination of lay and expert witnesses, and closing arguments. There are no written exercise.
Only the top team from each region can advance to the National Finals in New Orleans, LA. Temple University's team II emerged the winner in a close rivalry with Duquesne's team II. Both schools performed exceptionally well in the finals.
Philadelphia Regional Teams were from:
Penn State University Temple University Seaton Hall Law School Duquesne University Law School Widener University-Harrisburg School of Law Duke University Law School Chicago Kent College of Law Villanova University School of Law Regent University School of Law Pace University University of Wisconsin
