Larry Bailey advises ...

Y
ou may be uncomfortable at the thought
of discussing your estate with your loved ones. But
failing to do so could result in disagreements and conflicts when the details are revealed after your death.

Discussing your plans in advance gives you a chance to explain:

 The distribution of your estate.
 Why you made certain decisions.

In my experience, the need to communicate reasons for your decisions is particularly helpful when it comes to utilizing generation skipping provisions as opposed to outright distributions, when choosing one heir over another to be your fiduciary, when leaving your spouse's marital share in trust, or in the division of personal effects.  Your ability to communicate and demonstrate the reasons behind your decisions (tax or otherwise) are of a major help in maintaining family harmony after death.

You can also write a personal letter to some of your heirs that includes information about inheritances, special wishes, who should receive personal effects, your funeral preferences, and the location of important documents. Among the information that your heirs should be able to easily locate:

Income tax returns
• Life insurance policies
• Investment documents
• A list of valuable household contents
• Outstanding loan documents
• Automobile titles
• Bank account information
• Credit card details

These are just a few of the important details involved in estate planning. Contact us to help arrange your estate and gather the records needed for a smooth transition to your loved ones.
