DMLO is confident at the Kentucky State Fair

 

It's been said that a hobby needs to be very different from your day job.  After all, the point is to get away from the stresses of the job and to find an alternative form of expression.  With that in mind, take a big leap from number crunching all day on computers and you get animal husbandry, culinary arts and artistic pursuits.  Getting outside the box keeps the business mind fresh!

 

DMLO folks have an amazing array of talents outside their numbers oriented careers.  And they are so skilled that they enter – and often win – statewide competitions at the Kentucky State Fair.

 

Bob Daugherty may have the most experience at the Fair.  Two years ago he received a certificate recognizing his fifteen years of consecutive showings.  Bob raises prize winning rabbits and over the years he has shown anywhere from six to twenty-five rabbits at a time at the Fair.  His average number most years is around twelve.  This year he expects to show only two.  Bob has won numerous ribbons, many of which have been Blue. 


 

Kortney Ryan has been showing Brown Swiss dairy cows every year since she was nine years old (the first year allowed by Fair rules).  At one time, she and her family showed fifteen or so cows each year and they have won Blue Ribbons regularly.  This year her family picked one best cow and they hope to take home at least one Blue again.

 


Ruth Ann Judd
is relatively new to showing at the Fair compared to Bob and Kortney, just the past four years.  Yet her culinary entries have already won.  In the 2006 Kentucky State Fair, Ruth Ann took home a Blue Ribbon for her white cheddar jalapeno cheese spread and a Third Place ribbon for her benedictine.  Her ten-year-old daughter won Second Place in the Junior Division for her banana cake with cream cheese icing.  This year, Ruth Ann has entered seven (yes, 7) culinary items – five items in cakes and cookies and two items in the cheese category.  Her daughter has entered an item and even her mother got into the excitement this year for the first time by entering her bourbon balls.


 

Cassie Miller enjoys artistic pursuits and once upon a time she regularly entered cross-stitched items in the Fair.  This year she is excited to submit two entries in a brand new category for Scrapbooking.  This year Cassie has also entered a greeting card and a photo in other categories and she is hoping to come home with a ribbon.


 

Stephanie Ramper has normally been a participant with her culinary specialties at the Kentucky State Fair.  She specializes in pies and cakes.  But this year, Stephanie is backing her son to win a Junior Division ribbon.  Her son is entering his own concoction called Hawaiian Spam Tortellini which he developed for the Boy Scout Spam Cook-off this spring.  Since his recipe won the cook-off, he is hoping that his entry will bring home a top ribbon at the State Fair.
