Is your spreadsheet system causing you pain?

Do you dread working with your spreadsheets?

Have you lost confidence that your spreadsheets will give you the information you need to run your business operations with confidence?

Maybe it's time to consider working with a database. Additional signs that you may need to begin using a database include:

  • Changes made in one report or document must also be made in others
  • You feel that the amount of data you must manipulate is becoming out of control
  • You are tracking related information, such as sales for different office locations, in several spreadsheets
  • Several of your employees must jockey to see who can view the same information at the same time
  • You must constantly scroll your monitor screen to view your large amount of data
  • You have difficulty viewing the specific sets of data you need

A spreadsheet can handle:

  • Simple lists of data
  • Number crunching and automatic calculations
  • The creation and use of easy charts and graphs
  • The creation of "what-if" scenarios

A database should be used if:

  • Your data must be changed periodically (for example, pricing)
  • You must generate reports based upon your information
  • Related information is an unmanageable amount to use in a spreadsheet
  • You need to maintain records, such as client contact information, for ongoing use
