With today's improved video cards and larger monitors you can now squeeze more on your 17" or 19" desktop than ever before. But what if that is not enough? And wouldn't it be more convenient to keep your email or Internet browser viewable at all times while being able to work on your other applications such as spreadsheets or accounting applications?

Adding a second or third monitor is now easier than ever. Most laptops already come with an external video port. So adding an external monitor is a snap. Your laptop screen can be your primary monitor and the external monitor can be your secondary monitor ... or vice versa if you prefer.

Many newer desktop PCs come with video cards with dual video ports, so having two monitors is a simple plug and play scenario. But if you have an older PC your options are slightly more complex. You can add a second internal video card or a USB external video port.

Ideally the video card should be identical to the existing card. However, if that is not possible consider the following recommendations when choosing an additional video card or USB video port device:

1. The video capabilities and resolution should be similar to the existing video card
2. The video card should be compatible with the operating system you are currently running and may expect to upgrade to in the near future.
3. Be aware that two high-end internal video cards can create a tremendous amount of heat. Be certain that all cards have good ventilation when installing a second internal card.

When working with multiple monitors, it is most beneficial to have identical monitors. It makes the multi-monitor experience even more enjoyable. Subtle differences in colors and hues can be annoying. However, if it is not possible to have identical monitors, you will want to try to match screen size and quality.

In the early 1980's when I began in technology the only users that had large screens and multiple monitors were computer aided design (CAD) users. But today large, multiple monitors are more affordable and easily available to most users. Why not join the masses and take advantage of the multiple benefits?
