The llama captured the most in monetary donations in this year's holiday community project sponsored by the employees and friends of Stambaugh Ness. Sheep were the second most popular animal to gain donations, and pigs were third. A variety of other animals were also chosen.
The total $1915 donated was given to Heifer International, based in Little Rock, AR. The organization will buy specific animals indicated with the donations, and the animals will be given to people who can use them to better their lives. The offspring and products from the animals, such as milk, eggs, and wool, will provide food and income to those in need throughout the world.
For a variety of intertwined reasons, this year's project dubbed "Noah's Ark," supported this organization. Stambaugh Ness Receptionist Polly Weiss organized the project, and, she notes, the deeper she dug for information, the more interesting the angles became.

ANIMALS DONATED IN ORDER OF POPULARITY
The funds donated by Stambaugh Ness employees and friends will buy the following animals for those in need, in order of popularity:
- Llamas - Sheep - Pigs - Rabbits - Chicks - Ducks - Goats - Bees - Geese
Which would be YOUR choice?
| It was while researching Heifer International's website that Polly uncovered a local connection: "In 1944, the first shipment of 17 heifers left York, Pennsylvania, for Puerto Rico, going to families whose malnourished children had never even tasted milk." She found the reference to York in the website's history section that features the organization's founder, Dan West.
This project was also of great interest to a Stambaugh Ness employee who, as a political refugee from Ghana, spent a year in York County Prison. Although he was not a passenger on the Golden Venture immigrant smuggling ship that ran aground near New York City in 1993, his experience was outcome of that historical event.
Finally, in conversation, Polly learned that a Stambaugh Ness client previously raised heifers for Heifer International.
According to its website, the funds donated by Stambaugh Ness employees will help to end hunger and support the Heifer organization in its endeavors:
Heifer envisions... A world of communities living together in peace and equitably sharing the resources of a healthy planet.
Heifer's mission is... To work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth.
Heifer's strategy is... To "pass on the gift." As people share their animals' offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources, and skills – an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the globe.
Heifer's History This simple idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for over 60 years. Today, millions of families in 128 countries have been given the gifts of self-reliance and hope.
