How can you get your business ready for the future?

We are all aware that our businesses will be much different as time goes on. We know this because we see things changing all around us. Our customers and our suppliers have changed. We probably don't go to the same shopping malls we went to 10 years ago. The malls have changed and we have changed. The only thing that hasn't changed is change itself. It is unrelenting.

Unfortunately, most of us have difficulty getting past that nagging and unpleasant feeling that we ought to do something to remold our business; to get it ready for the future. Why is it so difficult? For one, our platters are already full. And besides, we are not very skilled at anticipating the future because we hardly ever do it. We are mostly on the defense, reacting to the latest assault on our survival.

If we want to get beyond fretting and the uneasy feelings, what do we have to do? Well, we can look for some good examples. Possibly, we can learn from a company that has obviously prepared well for its future. Toyota comes to mind. Toyota recently surpassed GM to become the world-wide leader in vehicle sells. And, it is important to know Toyota has a strong link to Dr. W. Edwards Deming and Peter Drucker. The famous Toyota manufacturing system is essentially the Deming model.

Both men were still actively teaching in their nineties. Both are memorialized as among the greatest gurus in the history of business. Their contributions are immense. Drucker's guidance on strategic planning is the most astute and convincing you will ever find. No one has implemented and institutionalized Drucker better than Dr. Deming. Toyota and the Japanese worship Dr. Deming who became the prime catalyst behind the huge success of Japanese industry. The greatest business honor you can receive each year in Japan is the Deming Prize.
