My husband and I owned a simply marvelous dog named Pugsly. Though he passed away in February of 2007, he gave me something so precious. He became my inspiration and reason for deciding to be actively involved with Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue. He made me so happy and loved me so very unconditionally, how could I not want to give back something to this wonderful breed?  He made sure Pete and I would not be alone, though.  We fostered and then adopted, or let me correct that...we fostered and then Molly Ann adopted Pete and Rascal adopted me during the fall of 2006.

I started my career with MAPR as a foster and transport volunteer. But in late spring of 2007 I was promoted to Intake Coordinator for the organization and Adoption Coordinator for Central Virginia. As Intake Coordinator, I receive the surrender documents by e-mail and assist in compiling information for the Adoption Coordinators and available foster families. Adoption Coordinators work with foster families in specific geographical locations to care for rescue dogs waiting for placement with a new forever home.

Since that time I've fostered and adopted several pugs.  And our pug family has continued to grow!  We now have 4 dogs, 3 of which are pugs:  Molly Ann, Rascal, Teddy and a pug mix, Nicky. If anyone had told me a year ago I'd have four dogs, I would have thought they were crazy.  Yes there are days when this job is sad, when an ill pug is surrendered or when one of our fur babies has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.  But mostly I find that working with MAPR is such a blessing. It allows me to feel fulfilled and believe my life matters in this world.  There is no monetary reward to match the sweet look of a pet when I open my front door.

The team of volunteers I work with are such wonderful, gracious and giving people. They all open their hearts unconditionally to help a rescued dog. Over the years MAPR has rescued not only pugs but mixes and a few other breeds as well. We also network with other rescue groups and animal shelters. I plan to continue with MAPR for a long time; and I hope and pray that I provide a solid resource of love for the animals.
