Individuals who receive duplicate economic stimulus payments are - what - just plain lucky? Well, no. If this has happened to you, you should immediately return the erroneous payment to the IRS, according to a spokesperson. There have been scattered reports of individuals receiving either duplicate paper checks or duplicate deposits in recent weeks.
The Treasury Department and the IRS are currently distributing roughly 130 million economic stimulus payments to qualifying recipients. Direct deposit has largely been completed, but distribution of paper checks is expected to continue into mid-July.
If a taxpayer receives more than one stimulus payment, the erroneous additional payment should be returned to the IRS, the spokesperson explained. "If the erroneous payment was received as a paper check, the check should be marked "VOID" in the endorsement section on the back of the check."
Additionally, the recipient should attach a note indicating that he or she is returning an "Erroneous Stimulus Payment Check." The spokesperson advised individuals to send the duplicate check and note to the IRS Center where he or she normally files his or her federal income tax return.
Individuals who receive duplicate direct deposits of economic stimulus payments should advise their bank or financial institution of the mistake, the spokesperson explained. "The bank or financial institution will know the proper procedures for returning the money to the IRS."
Supplemental Stimulus Payments
In other news, the IRS is gearing-up to send supplemental economic stimulus payments to approximately 350,000 individuals who initially filed returns failing to capture information about their children. Without this information, the IRS could not issue economic stimulus payments. These supplemental payments are expected to be issued in July, the spokesperson explained.
