Hurricane Ike made landfall on Galveston Island in the early morning of September 13, 2008 as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 110 miles per hour. Effective May 20, the temporary increase in the standard maximum deposit insurance amount (SMDIA) to $250,000 per depositor was extended by law through December 31, 2013.
