Short and Long Term Disability Payments
Both short term and long term disability payments paid by an employer through payroll and paid directly to the employee are subject to all the statutory deductions - income tax, canada pension plan, and employment insurance, and QPIP in the case of Quebec. In addition, the income associated with the payments must have insurable hours attached to them equal to whatever the employee's deemed hours normally would have been had they been working. |

| New Blow for Employers: Unemployment Taxes UP |
|
Just when the job market seems to be improving... employers are facing a new pounding that could cause further drag on job creation. Most employers, in most states, in 2010 are getting hit with higher unemployment tax rates. The worst example is in Hawaii, where the state employer-paid unemployment insurance tax could jump up an average of 600 per cent in 2010. Employers in at least 35 states are getting higher UI taxes.
