Employers using independent contractors are facing increasing risks. That's because the U.S. Labor Department, the IRS and many states have implemented new initiatives to search for employers who misclassify employees as independent contractors.
The latest example: President Obama's fiscal 2011 budget calls for hiring new federal investigators to help uncover improper classification cases.
