IRS Announces 2007 Standard Mileage Rates

The Internal Revenue Service has issued the 2007 optional standard mileage rate used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.  Begining January 1, 2007, the rates will be:

  • 48.5 cents per mile for business miles driven;
  • 20 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes; and
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service to a charitable organization.

    One of the best tax breaks available
    is the ability to avoid tax when selling a principal residence - up to $500,000 of gain is potentially tax-free for married couples filing jointly ($250,000 for single filers). However, in order to qualify, you must own and use the home for two out of the five years before the sale date. What if you're forced to move before that time?
