Nonprofits Beware, IRS Cautions on Political Activity that Endangers Exempt Status

With the airwaves buzzing with campaign speeches, ads, and debates, it's easy to get swept up in the election cycle.  But Nonprofit organizations must be cautious not to endanger their tax-exempt status through unlawful political activity.  The Internal Revenue Service announced its Political Activities Compliance Initiative (PACI) once again will be in effect for the 2008 election season. The PACI program seeks to educate section 501(c)(3) organizations, such as charities and churches, about the federal law concerning political campaign activity and to enforce the law in this area.
