NHTSA: Anti-Rollover for Cars





The government said it would require all new passenger vehicles to have anti-rollover technology by the 2012 model year.

The Transportation Department said "electronic stability control" -ESC
, could prevent between 5,300 and 9,600 deaths annually and up to 238,000 injuries a year once it is fully deployed into the nation's fleet. The technology could help motorists maintain control of their car when swerving to avoid an unexpected object in the middle of the road.

Some safety groups say that the requirements are not stringent enough and failed to push automakers to put advanced systems on their cars or even systems presently available.
