New SEC Custody Rule
The SEC recently brought a series of enforcement cases against financial advisors who had access to their clients' assets and misused them. Some of these advisors tried to cover their tracks by distributing false account statements to their clients reflecting assets that didn't really exist. The SEC issued a new rule to help prevent this from happening again in the future.

OTTI Has Been Taken-Now What?
Just when bankers were working diligently and tirelessly to understand the extent of credit difficulties in their loan portfolios during 2008 and 2009, many also identified other-than-temporary impairment (OTTI) write-downs on investment securities. The estimation process used to determine the amount of OTTI that exists is often cumbersome and complex by itself. However, after recording OTTI there are several accounting principles to be taken into consideration for the remaining life of each security that can cause some significant additional headaches. In this article, we'll explore each of these and provide some practical ideas to help you address the subsequent accounting for investment securities on which OTTI has been taken.
